Uyghur Artist Illustrates Works of Kyrgyz Author Chinghiz Aitmatov

An 84-year-old Uyghur artist and designer, Sabidjan Babadjanov, has dedicated his talent to illustrating the literary works of the world-renowned Kyrgyz author Chinghiz Aitmatov.

A Journey of Art and Inspiration

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA) in Bishkek, Babadjanov shared insights into his artistic journey and the profound impact of his first encounter with Aitmatov's writings.

From Xinjiang to Kyrgyz Lands

Born in 1941 in Kulja, China, Babadjanov's early years were shaped by his grandfather's teachings and a move to Kyrgyz lands in 1955, where his connection to Aitmatov's birthplace deepened.

Artistic Pursuits and Education

Driven by a passion for painting, Babadjanov pursued formal art education in Tashkent and Bishkek, culminating in a successful career as a design artist.

Inspired by 'Jamilya'

Babadjanov's admiration for Aitmatov's works blossomed after reading "Jamilya," drawing parallels between the novel's landscapes and his own experiences, leading to a decision to visually interpret Aitmatov's literary masterpieces.

Meeting Aitmatov

In 1988, Babadjanov had the honor of meeting Aitmatov in Sheker village, where he presented his artwork to the revered author, receiving praise and encouragement that further fueled his artistic endeavors.

Illustrating Aitmatov's Legacy

Through his illustrations of key themes from Aitmatov's works such as "The Difficult Passage" and "The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years," Babadjanov's intricate pencil and watercolor artworks vividly capture the essence of the author's storytelling.
